Step 1. Open Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer).

Step 2. Click View.

Step 3. Select Folder Options at the bottom of the pull-down.

Step 4. Click the File Types tab.

Step 5. You'll see a list of file types. Browse the list to look for something that resembles the player your browser is currently defaulting to (the player you DO NOT want to use). This can be tricky since names of players in this window are shortened. For example, MusicMatch will read Mmjb and Media Player reads MPLAYER2 File.

Step 6. Click on the file type once. Make sure it says Extension: MP3 under File type details. This verifies the application you selected is indeed the player that is set up to be your default MP3 player.

Step 7. Now that you've found the right file type, click Edit.

Step 8. Click Browse to find the file name of the new player you want to default to, making sure it ends with .exe. Then add "%1" at the end, and click OK.

Step 8. Repeat steps 6 through 8, but this time you need to Edit the default player for M3Us instead of MP3s. Look for M3U under File type details. (This will ensure proper default setting for streaming audio files.)

Step 9. Quit and restart Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer.

If the above doesn't work, try the following:

Step 1. Open Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer).

Step 2. Click View.

Step 3. Select Folder Options at the bottom of the pull-down.

Step 4. Click the File Types tab.

Step 5. Click the New Type button and fill in the following:
Description of type: MP3 file
Associated extension: .mp3
Content Type (MIME): audio/mpeg

Step 6. Under Actions, click the New button.

Step 7. In the New Action box, type "open" in the Action window.

Step 8. Click Browse to find the file name of the new player you want to default to, making sure it ends with .exe. Then add "%1" at the end, and click OK.

Step 9. Repeat steps 5 through 8, but this time, you need to create a new file type for an M3U file with the .m3u-associated extension.

Step 10. Quit and restart Netscape.
